INTRODUCTIONS

A COUPLE OF BOOKS ON THE GO AT THE MOMENT

Greetings all. On one of my regular 11 hour coach journeys between Paris and Cambridge, extreme exhaustion creeping in, legs sprawled out awkwardly in search of comfort and nibbling on some poorly chosen last-minute coach food (mini apricot jam donuts, anyone?), I was flicking through the blogging copy of Company magazine I'd bought at Victoria 7 hours earlier. While I'm pleased that bloggers are getting the recognition they deserve in mainstream media, I was slightly horrified at the A-Z of blogging I found within - unless I missed some very subtle irony beneath it all. Though I do fulfill some of the criteria (boyfriend with a beard ✓), the fact that blogging can be reduced down to such an originality-sapping list of requirements, peddling Instagram and Apple products as a must (again, call me out if I missed the irony), saddened me and inspired me to start what I hope will be a more eclectic and less cookie-cutter blog. Whether I'll stick to this irritatingly self-righteous resolution is another matter, but I hope you'll join me to find out as I document my less than aspirational life outside Paris' peripherique, show off occasional purchases and dish out recommendations for music, film, books, even tattoos. In the mean time, why don't I contradict my little credo by following a current blogging trend and giving you a list of facts about myself so we can become better acquainted:
INSTAX 2012

1. I spent 8 years of my childhood - between the ages of 8 and 16 - living in dusty developing city Phnom Penh, Cambodia with my missionary parents who were helping with the country's recovery from the Pol Pot regime

2. As a result, I saw a large portion of Asia which gave me a taste for travel and good food - possibly why I ended up in Paris, and also why my boyfriend and I hope to live in Korea in the future to teach English

3. My boyfriend and I have been together for 10 months but are separated by the channel. We still manage to see each other almost every week, thanks to the wonders of modern... coach travel

4. Both of us feel we could never hold down a traditional 9-5 job and hope to take up freelance work which will allow us to see the world as we work - travel/music journalism or even translation would be ideal for me

5. I watch far, far too much television and my favourite series include Flight of the Conchords, Peep Show, Archer, Black Books, Arrested Development, Ab Fab, The Office, Girls and so on and so forth. Recommendations welcome!

If you're still reading then relief is nigh - I'm off to have a spot of 3PM breakfast and a smoothie. See you soon for another - probably equally contradictory - installment. Be good.
